So my question to my fellow Ass Cheek Angels and our followers, if you had to name one fictional couple you felt were the poster children for a great love story, who would that couple be? I'll get us started.

The Black Moment
Last weekend, my husband had a seizure. At the time, I wasn't sure if he was having a heart attack, a seizure or a stroke. All I knew for sure was I thought he was dying. It was the black moment in our romance story. I was crying and praying and yelling for someone to get me help. It wasn't pretty and it wasn't calm and it wasn't fun. I truly thought he was dying in my arms. Thankfully, he's alive and well, but at that moment in my life, it became very clear how much our love story meant to me. I'm not ready for it to end for years and years and decades to come.

So very glad your hubby is all right. When you first told us what happened I could not stop thinking about how I would react if it had happened to me and my dh.

So glad your husband is okay. October 2009, when I got my cancer diagnosis, it felt like the blackest moment. I don't pretend to know what the future holds, but it certainly gave me perspective on what was most important to me, including my husband and our relationship. We are closer than we've ever been.
ReplyDeleteAs far as a fictional couple who is the epitome of romance to me, I'd have to say Viola De Lesseps and Will Shakespeare in Shakespeare in Love. One of my favorite movies, and I love the Romeo and Juliet play within a play, but Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes had real chemistry also. Great movie, great couple, even if they don't end up together in the end.

Sorry to hear about what you and your husband went through last week, Lisa. I'm glad to hear he's okay. A black moment in my life happened about 11 years ago when a tumor was found growing in my womb instead of a baby. Thankfully, it didn't turn out to be cancerous, but it did put life in perspective for me. I will never forget what I learned.
ReplyDeleteMy most recent black moment was admitting that my own love story wasn't unfolding as I'd written. Even though we've closed the final chapter on it, our love will never die because he is the father of my children. We will always be tied together in this way, and if something ever happened to him it would still hurt because of them. I speak about this not because it's the best time of my life, but because there are people out there afraid to speak about it. People aren't alone in what they go through, and I'm glad you chose to share your story with Lisa.
My favorite fictional couple is Elizabeth Swan and Will Turner from the Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy. When they finally married on the deck of the ship, only for him to be stabbed through the heart - my heart clenched for the two of them!

I have to agree with Cherie about the characters from Shakespeare in Love. It was a wonderful story, even though the characters didn't end up together. The tragedy made it real and memorable.
Another one is Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving from V for Vendetta. It wasn't much of a love story, but I thought the connection between the characters was unique and dramatic.
I was born with heart disease, and I've had three open heart surgeries. This has made me very insecure about how I look, and I've never been able to wear certain clothes. This is the part that I've always kept to myself, and never let anyone know -- especially the boys/men I've dated. When my boyfriend came around, who is now my husband, I began to be change and tell him about all that I've gone through. Over the years, I've had hospital stays, doctor's visits, and one cardioversion, and through it all, he's stayed my Hero. This black moment has been a small miracle in my life, which has made my friendship and my marriage stronger. As for a poster couple, I'd say Minnie Driver and David Duchovny in "Return To Me."

ReplyDeleteLisa, I'm so glad hubby is okay. It reminds me that for all the griping I do about my DH, I've really got to make sure he knows how much I love him. Every day.
And Isabella, thank you. I think sometimes the things others might call our weaknesses, become the details that prove our strength.
As far as great love stories go, I've always been fond of Clare Abshire and Henry DeTamble from Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife. Such a heartbreaking inevitability to those two.
And, of course, there's always Greg and Carol Brady... but that's a beast of an ENTIRELY different color.

ReplyDeleteThere are so many great ones, it is hard to pick. I agree with Elizabeth Swan and Will Turner though. Although, I would have to say, Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy are my all time favorites!
Jesus, Lisa...this is what I get for not checking in often enough. So sorry you had that scare, but soo glad your hubby's okay now. Making the sign of the cross...it's a Catholic thing.
ReplyDeleteI had plenty of black moments in my first marriage that don't even bear repeating. Kellie, good for you on getting along with your ex. If mine dropped off the face of the earth...eh...I guess I'd miss him a little, but that's his fault.
Black moment in this marriage was my breast cancer...definitely...scared the crap out of me, but soooo made me appreciate my family. I tell my hubby every day how much I love him, even though I'm a bitch and nag at him, and he's an inconsiderate asshole sometimes.
When it comes to great love stories, I don't know...I guess I'm too realistic. Three sets of characters come to mind...Samantha and Jake in 'Sixteen Candles', Mary Stuart Masterson and Erik Stoltz in "Some Kind of Wonderful"(can't remember character names in the movie). Both are prime examples of the girls' dreams coming true, once the guys pulled their heads out of their asses long enough to see what was really important in a woman. The third I'll sit down to watch when I need a good cry. Melin and Drum Eatonton from "Steel Magnolias" are not your classic love story couple, but when you lose a child together and live to tell about it...well...that's life.
